Digitising green spaces
18-20 June 2021

The first CASSINI hackathon will challenge participants to develop innovative solutions that sustainably improve our green spaces in urban and rural areas. The hackathon is open to anyone with a passion for entrepreneurship, nature, and EU space technologies and challenges them to use one or both of the following:

1) geospatial information from Copernicus Earth observation data and its services

2) positioning technologies from Galileo & EGNOS.

No previous experience using space technologies, data, or signals? No problem! The hackathon has all the tools and training you need to succeed. Check out the three challenges below, and think about how to make a difference!

Challenge #

Discover your city

Green spaces are critical to healthy urban life, contributing to greater biodiversity, a reduction in air pollution, and improved well-being for humans. Green spaces are particularly vital in heavily congested and highly populated areas, making them more aesthetically pleasing and enhancing the quality of life for those who live there.

This challenge tasks participants to design products, devices, services or environments that enable urban citizens to better understand their city and its green spaces. Participants who choose this challenge will need to leverage European space data, information and signals from Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS. We encourage hackers to dive into the areas of:

  • Supporting urban planning and real estate development & valuations
  • Discover green factors contributing to residential life
  • Promoting ecological sustainability

Challenge #

Staying fit and healthy

The science is in – staying fit (both physically and mentally) requires regular exercise and plenty of time outdoors. While we all know this is the recipe for a healthy well-being, it is often challenging to find the perfect place to exercise, particularly in urban environments!

This challenge tasks participants to design products, devices or services that enable city dwellers to stay active and keep their minds and bodies healthy. Participants who choose this challenge will need to leverage European space data, information and signals from Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS. We encourage hackers to dive into the areas of:

  • Mapping and accessing green spaces for outdoor activity
  • Forecasting air pollutants such as pollen, nitrogen oxide, or particulate matter
  • Understanding and monitoring UV exposure

Challenge #

Protecting our rural areas

Both open and forested green spaces on the outskirts of urban environments are incredibly beneficial to citizens. From providing a natural setting to visit and connect with nature to encouraging conversations about wildlife conservation and forest health, our rural environments are a fundamental part of a sustainable future.

This challenge tasks participant to design products, devices, services or environments that promote the digitalisation of rural green spaces. Participants who choose this challenge will need to leverage European space data, information and signals from Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS. We encourage hackers to dive into the areas of:

  • Wildlife and ecosystem conservation
  • Ensure healthy and resilient forests
  • Development of new green spaces and underdeveloped areas
